Ocala was named Horse Capital of the World in the 90s and is
home to approximately 1,200 horse farms.
Subsequently Ocala and Marion County have developed an
infrastructure second to none in the country when it comes to
serve horses and their owners. There is probably no other place in
the country where you will find over 200 Equine Hospitals and
Veterinarians for horses, multiple Horse Feed Producers, 75
Horse Shoers and Ferriers, several Horse Transportation Companies
(including Air Carriers from Ocala International Taylor Field),
Horse Sanctuary Wellness centers, countless tack and feed stores and
much more.
Ocala has a population just shy of 50,000 and Marion County recently
jumped over the 300,000 mark. Although most farms are operated
around the year, there are also quite a few farms that move
livestock and equipment twice a year: The owners and horses come
into Ocala around October/November and very likely stay here until
April or May of the next year.
So in sunny and mild winter Ocala/Marion County is home for about 300,000 horses. While the majority might still be Thoroughbred Race Horses staying here in winter for Training, estimation is a total of about 200 different breeds that call Ocala home.
In the last few years it is obvious that also other Sport Horses
have found their way to Ocala. The area has become one of the
favorite places for Dressage, Show and Hunter Jumpers as well as for
many disciplines in Western Sports.
Accordingly we see more Training Barns coming up for these sports
while at the same time more events and horse shows for Dressage and
Jumpers are offered throughout the area. The new Florida Horse Park
in Southwest Ocala accommodates not only for Driving and Polo but
also for Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross Country for the
3-day-eventers. Close by Newberry Horse Park offers frequently
Dressage and Hunter Shows.
With this amazing rural offer and its amazing Outdoors, Ocala
also attracts increasingly Non-Horse People: Ocala's solid
infrastructure with outstanding health and medical facilities,
countless Restaurants from Fine Dining to all major branded
Restaurants, and excellent Shopping venues have drawn many Snowbirds
permanently to the Ocala area.
Housing is still affordable and travel connections are superb, so
that both the Atlantic coast as well as the Gulf coast is just 50
minutes drive-time away. At the same distance Ocaleans find the
attractions of Disney World and Universal in Orlando or NASCAR
racing in Daytona or Kennedy Space Center at the Space Coast.
